The University of Macau (UM) is slated to launch its two-year Master of Arts (MA) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programme in the 2024/2025 academic year, with applications now open, the tertiary education institution said in a statement yesterday.

Students in the programme will explore areas such as applied linguistics, intercultural communication, and English teaching paedagogy, the statement noted.

According to the statement, they will also learn to master teaching the four language skills, which are listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as how to effectively apply innovative teaching strategies. Skills to meet the needs of students and local contexts will also be learnt.

Moreover, the statement said that the programme emphasises fostering critical and reflective thinking and practices among English-language teachers, adding that students will participate in professional development training and field-based practices with English-language educators from different regions, according to the statement.

The statement said that UM Faculty of Education Associate Prof. and Programme Coordinator Yu Shulin noted that the programme aims to equip students with advanced knowledge and theories in TESOL, as well as professional skills and cultural awareness essential for effective English teaching. With the programme being practice orientated, students will need to submit a project report demonstrating their teaching practice and reflection abilities to meet graduation criteria, he added.
