Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said during a regular press conference yesterday that three victims were separately cheated out of a total of 3.23 million patacas between them in fake police scams.

The victims comprise a female from the mainland and a local male, both aged under thirty; and an elderly local resident.

According to Lou, the victims were scammed out of 913,400 patacas, HK$480,000 and HK$1.84 million respectively. In the cases, the victims received phone calls from individuals claiming to be staff members of a specific mainland bureau in the past two months. The callers made preposterous accusations, alleging that the victims were involved in spreading scandalous SMS messages in the mainland.

Believing the claims to be true, the victims transferred different amounts of cash as a “security deposit” to the designated bank accounts provided by the fraudsters.

Each of them finally reported his or her case to the police after being urged by friends or family members to do so.
