Galaxy, in collaboration with the Macau Artist Society and supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), launched on February 2 “GENESIS: Contemporary Installation Art Journey” at GalaxyArt, the integrated resort’s art space located within the Galaxy Promenade.
Running until May 6, the exhibition showcases the works of three local female artists: Ng Man Wai, Sou Leng Fong, and Cheong Hoi I*.
During the opening ceremony, exhibition curator Lam Tsz Kwan noted that the exhibition derived its name from the Greek word “genesis,” which signifies “creation.” The aim of the exhibition is to inspire visitors with positive energy and present fresh possibilities for the season, she said.
According to a statement at the exhibition, Ng is known for her realistic reproductions of everyday objects, exploring the contrast between the “real and unreal” and the concepts of “replication and variation”.
In her series titled “Doppelgänger: The Apple”, she translates the German word Doppelgänger into “a person with a very similar appearance”. The series features portraits of a sliced apple in various sizes and forms, as well as installation art, providing visitors with different perspectives on the texture and sensation of an apple.
The statement noted that Sou often draws inspiration from plants and marine life, utilising clay as her medium of expression. Her artworks feature dynamic, irregular lines and shapes that mimic the natural contours of organisms. Her installation art at the exhibition “Blooming” is a piece that hangs from the ceiling like a chandelier, showcasing her organic and nature-inspired artistic style, the statement noted.
Cheong ‘s installation art piece, “Pleased as Fruit Punch”, is described by the statement as a large display of iridescent strips that unfurl like flower petals. The reflective surfaces create a kaleidoscopic effect with shifting colours and patterns. Cheong’s focus on installation art is to offer visitors multiple angles and perspectives to experience the artwork uniquely. The intricacy of “Pleased as Fruit Punch” particularly aims to provide an immersive and multi-dimensional experience for viewers.
