Scammers are again impersonating Apple, randomly sending out SMS messages containing phishing links to many residents, according to a statement from the Judiciary Police (PJ) released yesterday.

The statement noted that the messages claim that the recipients’ accounts have been “locked due to security issues”, instructing them to log onto their Apple accounts through an embedded link for verification. This will then redirect them to a webpage resembling the official Apple login page.

If one enters their login credentials, the statement pointed out that the scammers can then use the victims’ Apple IDs for illegal purposes, potentially resulting in financial losses.

The PJ Anti-Fraud Coordination Centre reminded members of the public to remain vigilant and not to click embedded links in text messages, according to the statement. They should also independently verify a message’s authenticity through official channels. One should also call the anti-fraud hotline on 8800 7777 if one suspects fraud.
