Fado Nights will be hosted on Fridays and weekends from March 1 to 24 at the Dom Pedro V Theatre on Largo de Santo Agostinho, comprising 12 performances throughout the period, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday, with tickets now on sale.
Fado, which originally means destiny or fate but nowadays the word is entirely linked to the music genre, features a single vocalist, Portuguese guitar and sometimes classical guitar. The statement noted that it immerses listeners in stories of love, loss and longing. The genre originated in Lisbon in the 19th century. It was inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2011.
The statement said that Portuguese Fado singers Tiago Correia and Bárbara Santos will perform solo and as a duo during the concerts. Moreover, from 6 p.m., typical Portuguese snacks and drinks will be available before the show, along with light instrumental music by local artists. One can also learn about Fado’s history in an exhibition at the Theatre Gallery, according to the statement.
Tickets, uniformly priced at 200 patacas, are now on sale, with various discounts available on the Macau Ticketing Network, but the discounts are not available on the Damai or Cityline platforms. The statement added that spectators can redeem a beverage by presenting their tickets. Ticketing details can be found on www.macauticket.com, www.damai.cn and www.cityline.com, or the 24-hour ticketing hotline on 2855 5555.
