The Transport Bureau (DSAT) announced yesterday during a press conference that it will carry out a quinquennial transport survey by address-based sampling starting today until the end of July, aiming to understand residents’ travel behaviour and patterns, better formulate Macau’s traffic policy and improve transport planning.

The survey, conducted in conjunction with UMTEC Limited, is divided into two parts, namely, an address-based sampling and online questionnaire, of which the former will involve 3,600 households covering the Macau peninsula, Taipa and Coloane from every Tuesday through Saturday with the assistance of the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC), while the latter is slated to be launched in the second half of this year, according to yesterday’s press conference at the DSAT headquarters on Estrada de D. Maria II.

The press conference noted that the selected households will receive a letter from the Transport Bureau within 14 days prior to the survey, underlining that questionnaires will be filled out by uniform-wearing pollsters carrying special work permits.

According to the press conference, the questionnaire is divided into three parts, comprising household information, personal details and transport and travel characteristics, mainly to find out the purpose and circumstances of the household members’ travel on the day before the survey was conducted, as well as the means of transport they had used and the number of trips they made per day. The results of the survey are expected to be released at the beginning of next year.

Such a survey was conducted by the bureau in 2009, 2014 and 2019 respectively, Un Chao Wa, who heads the bureau’s Transport Planning and Infrastructure Department, said during the press conference, adding that the survey also aims to serve as a basis for Macau’s overall transport policy.

Un also said that the mid-term review of “Macau Land Transport Planning (2021-2030)” will be conducted next year and that the results of the review were expected to be announced between 2025 and 2026. Un added that the upcoming survey will also serve as a data base for the relevant mid-term review.

The survey is budgeted at about 4.48 million patacas, which is similar to the cost of the previous surveys which, however, did not include online questionnaires, Un said.

Transport is the intentional movement of humans, animals and goods from one location to another. Intermodal passenger transport is where a trip is performed through the use of several modes of transport – and since all human transport normally starts and ends with walking, all passenger transport can be considered intermodal, according to Wikipedia.
