Three men from the mainland have separately been arrested for allegedly burgling two flats, PJ spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a special press conference yesterday.

In the first case, the suspects are a 43-year-old man surnamed Zheng and a 39-year-old man surnamed Li. They told the police that they’re renovation workers.

According to Chan, a local resident reported to the police on Sunday that earlier that day his flat on Avenida do Conselheiro Borja had been burgled and approximately 380,000 patacas worth of cash and gold jewellery had gone missing.

The police found two crowbars in the stairwell of the building, believed to have been used in the break-in. The police later scrutinised CCTV footage and discovered that Zheng and Li had purchased the crowbars and work gloves in the northern district on the same day. The duo were arrested when they re-entered Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Monday morning. Work gloves were found on both suspects, Ho noted.

In the second case, the suspect surnamed Gu is a 36-year-old male who said that he is a renovation worker.

According to Ho, on the evening of November 6 last year, the police received a report of a burglary at a unit in a building on Rua de Nam Keng in Taipa. The victim told the police that he left his flat in the morning and when he returned at around 7:30 p.m., he discovered that a room had been ransacked, and cash, a diamond ring and foreign currency amounting to 97,000 patacas had vanished.

Police officers found that the window leading to the air shaft from the unit had been opened, suspecting that the burglar entered the building, climbed up the air shaft and entered the flat through the window to commit the burglary before returning to the mainland.

The police intercepted Gu when he re-entered Macau via the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Monday. A screwdriver was found in his possession.

Under questioning, the three suspects refused to cooperate.

The three suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing aggravated theft charges, Ho said.

Evidence seized from the two suspected burglars such as banknotes, a crowbar and three pairs of work gloves is displayed during yesterday’s special press conference at the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters.
