The University of Macau (UM) recently hosted the 10th Cambridge Librarians’ Day Forum, with the event bringing together over 70 librarians and experts from Japan, Singapore, South Korea and the Philippines, as well as the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, according to a statement from the public university yesterday.

The statement noted that the forum, themed “The Future of Research and Learning: Influence, User Support, and Opportunities in AI”, was jointly organised by UM and Cambridge University Press, and featured topics such as library development.

How to meet the needs of future researchers and learners by increasing influence, supporting users, and identifying opportunities in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) were also discussed by attendees, the statement said.

The statement added that keynote speeches were delivered by UM Librarian Wu Jianzhong and Germany’s Max Planck Digital Library’s head of Scientific Information Provision Adam Der. They spoke about how academic libraries and research institutions can support open research, and the opportunities and challenges involved in open research transformation.

The participating experts also had in-depth discussions on transformative agreements for open access, the statement noted

During a speech at the forum’s opening ceremony, UM Vice Rector Rui Martins remarked he hoped that the forum and related discussions could inject new impetus into library transformation and innovation.

Moreover, Cambridge University Press Commercial Director Chris Bennett emphasised the importance of libraries in higher education and research, and looked forward to achieving a win-win situation for universities, researchers, and publishers by promoting more open research and high-quality publications.
