One more case of carbon monoxide poisoning has been reported, this time a woman who had switched on the gas hob in her kitchen yesterday but did not open the door or window, according to a statement by the Health Bureau (SSM) last night.

Yesterday’s case came after a 72-year-old local man was diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning on Monday while showering.

Yesterday’s case occurred in a flat in Block 9 of the Kong Fok On Garden residential estate in the northern district, according to last night’s statement.

The 60-year-old local woman switched on the gas hob at around midday yesterday, after which she left the kitchen but had not opened the door or window, the statement said.

According to the statement, the woman entered the kitchen again an hour later, after which she felt dizzy and came down with a chest pain after staying there for 10 minutes. Her family then called an ambulance, which took her to the private Kiang Wu Hospital for emergency treatment, the statement said.

The woman was diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning and was hospitalised for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Last night’s statement said that she was in a stable condition.

The statement said that the kitchen door and window were both closed when the case occurred, with only the kitchen hood having been switched on.

Consequently, the statement said, the Health Bureau has preliminarily concluded that the incident was caused by poor ventilation, allowing toxic gas to accumulate.

Meanwhile, according to a statement by the Fire Services Bureau (CB) statement, the kitchen’s ventilator was not switched on at the time of the incident.
