The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a Mongolian man for purloining 60,000 patacas from a local man, PJ spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a special press conference on Friday.

The suspect, aged 55, is surnamed Purevdorj, Ho added.

According to Ho, the Judiciary Police received a report from the victim at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday about the theft, saying that his wallet containing 60,000 patacas had been stolen from his backpack which he placed behind him together with a suitcase when he was chatting with a friend at a shop in the northern district at about 6 p.m. that day.

Ho said that the Judiciary Police soon identified the pickpocket as Purevdorj and put him under surveillance, during which PJ officers discovered that the suspect boarded a bus bound for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) checkpoint at noon on Thursday. The officers arrested him when he got off the bus at the checkpoint.

Ho added that taking advantage when the victim was chatting with his friend, the suspect opened the victim’s backpack and stole the wallet.

Under questioning, Purevdorj refused to cooperate with the police and to reveal the whereabouts of the stolen money, Ho said.

Purevdorj was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) after Friday’s press conference, where he faces an aggravated theft charge.
