A workplace accident occurred at the site of the future prison in Ka Ho in Coloane on Saturday morning, in which two male non-resident workers (NRWs) were injured and one local male worker who was drifting in and out of consciousness needed resuscitation, according to a Fire Services Bureau (CB) message yesterday.
The message identified the three male workers as a 48-years-old and a 53-year-old male blue card holders, and a 47-year-old local male worker.
The 47-year-old local suffered contusion and swelling of the right elbow, right calf and left ankle and he was conscious and in stable condition when he was rushed to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre, while the 48-year-old NRW suffered contusion and swelling on the left side of his abdomen. He was also conscious when he was rushed to the public hospital, the message said.
The message said that the 53-year-old NRW, who was taken to the Resuscitation Unit of the public hospital, sustained a suspected fracture of the pelvis and bleeding from a laceration on the right thigh.
The message said the incident was suspected to have been caused by metal girders slipping when being lifted off the lorry by a crane.
Meanwhile, the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) said in a statement on the day of the accident that it is paying close attention to the accident, adding that it will assist the injured in the process of claiming compensation for the accident.
The statement said that after the incident, the bureau immediately went to the scene and inspected the site, and the bureau’s preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was caused by a lorry that was preparing to unload metal girders at the construction site when some slipped off the lorry and hit and injured three workers.
The statement underlined that the bureau patrols construction sites daily and will immediately halt dangerous construction operations. The bureau urged the construction sector to join its work-site safety courses and read its pamphlets.
The construction sector is advised to refer to the lifting safety guidelines produced by the bureau at https://www.dsal.gov.mo/dsso/zh_tw/standard/download_printed_matter_booklet.html, the statement said.
