A panel made up of writers Graça Pacheco Jorge, Annabel Jackson and Barrie Sherwood gave a talk entitled “Writing Macau Cuisine: From Recipes to Research and Fiction” at Casa Garden on Friday, which was part of The Script Road- 13th Macau Literary Festival that ended yesterday.

Jorge authored the book “The Cuisine of Macao from My Grandfather’s House”, which was published in 2014, compiling recipes left by her grandparents, who were Macanese collector José Vicente Jorge and his wife Matilde Pacheco Jorge, to conserve and promote Macanese gastronomy, according to a summary on the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) website.

Jackson, meanwhile, researched and wrote the 2004 book “Taste of Macau: Portuguese Cuisine on the China Coast”, and “The Making of Macau’s Fusion Cuisine: From Family Table to World Stage”, which was published in 2020. The author is based in Hong Kong.

Sherwood, who was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Canada and is now based in Singapore, is the writer of the 2021 novel “The Macanese Pro-Wrestler’s Cookbook”, where a pro-wrestler named Zeke Oliveira returned to Macau to look after the family restaurant.

The English-language event, which lasted around an hour and a half, was moderated by artist and architect Carlos Marreiros. Attendees had a chance to learn more about the world of Macanese cuisine, the authors, their books, as well as the work and ideas that went into writing them. The night ended with a Q&A session between the speakers and participants.
