During a regular press conference yesterday, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong announced a burglary case, in which a man from the mainland broke a shop’s cash register in Zape.

The suspect surnamed Cheng is an overstayer in his forties. Cheong did not disclose what kind of shop Cheng burglarised.

Cheong said that the incident took place in the early hours of Friday. While the shopkeeper briefly left the store, Cheng surreptitiously entered and used a tool to break open the cash register, stealing 75,000 patacas from it and quickly leaving the scene.

Following the shopkeeper’s report to the police, they discovered that Cheng had loitered outside the shop for half an hour before carrying out the burglary. Subsequently, Cheng went to a casino in Taipa where he was apprehended in the early morning on the same day.

Under questioning, he admitted to the crime and claimed that he had gambled away all the money.

Cheng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge, according to Cheong.
