A female secretary was arrested recently for stealing more than 6.3 million patacas of her employer’s property from his home in Macau, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said at a press briefing yesterday.
Cheong identified the suspect as a 40-year-old local woman surnamed Ng, while the male victim, who usually resides in Hong Kong, has a company in Macau, Cheong said, adding that the suspect had worked for the victim’s company as a secretary for a few years.
Cheong said that the victim went to his home in Macau last week and found that some property was missing, including cheques usually issued by the secretary, and jewellery in a safe deposit box. As he had lost contact with the secretary since last Monday, the victim suspected that she stole the valuables.
A police investigation discovered that the secretary had been transferring some of her employer’s assets by writing cheques since September last year without his consent. Cheong said that the suspect refused to reveal the whereabouts of the stolen property when she was questioned.
According to Cheong, the suspect was responsible for the daily operations of the company, and she kept the keys to the victim’s residence in Macau, and also knew the combination to unlock the victim’s safe at home where he kept the jewellery.
Ng was intercepted by the police at the Macau checkpoint when she returned to Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) after she had absconded to Taiwan for a while, and the police found 30,000 patacas in cash on her.
Ng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge, according to Cheong.
