The University of Macau’s (UM) State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI* Director Mak Pui In has been elected as a foreign corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, ACL), making him the academy’s first Macau-born-and-educated foreign corresponding member, the public university said in a statement on Wednesday.

Prof. Mak, who received both his bachelor’s and PhD degrees from UM, is also the deputy director of the Institute of Microelectronics and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor. The statement noted that he was elected to the position upon nomination by UM Vice Rector and ACL permanent member Rui Martins.

The ACL, according to the statement, is “one of the oldest and most prestigious academies in the world and is dedicated to the advancement of sciences and learning”. It was founded in 1779 and is an International Council for Science (now known as the International Science Council) founding member and a European Science Foundation member.

The statement added that the honour recognises Prof. Mak’s outstanding achievements in scientific research and helps strengthen academic cooperation between Macau and Portugal.

His research over the past two decades has focused on “analog and radio frequency integrated circuit design, interdisciplinary science, and engineering innovation”, the statement said.

Prof. Mak also founded UM’s first spin-off company, Digifluidic Biotech Ltd. in 2018, and in 2022 became the first Macau researcher to receive the Tencent Xplorer Prize for his research on batteryless smart electronics, the statement said.

He is currently the editor-in-chief of the “IEEE Solid-State Circuits Letters”, a journal in the electronics field, and has held several leading positions in the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

More about Mak’s achievements can be found on the UM website.
