Macau’s first-ever pair of red pandas, male  ‘Lok Lok’ and female ‘Tong Tong’, who arrived last month from Sichuan province made their first public appearance at Seac Pai Van Park yesterday.
According to a statement on Friday by the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM), which manages the park, Lok Lok and Tong Tong have passed the 30-day quarantine period and are fit and healthy so that they can greet the public at the Pavilion of Rare Animals in the park, which includes the giant panda pavilion.
The Chinese character for “Lok” means to burn and “Tong” means warm. Both Chinese characters are associated with fire. In Chinese, red pandas are also referred to as “firefoxes”. Lok Lok and Tong Tong are the Cantonese pronunciation of their Putonghua names which are Luo Luo and Tong Tong.
