The 2024 Macao International Environmental Cooperation Forum & Exhibition (2024MIECF) opened yesterday, with the event ending tomorrow at The Venetian Macao in Cotai.

Marking its 16th year, the three-day event comprises 416 exhibitors and 562 booths across five major exhibition areas this year.

Addressing yesterday’s opening ceremony, Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) Director Raymond Tam Vai Man pointed out that with the forum having become an important platform for international exchanges and cooperation between mainland China and its international partners, especially for the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, this year’s MIECF is themed “Reaching the Dual Carbon Goals through Green Transformation”, which was in line with the international consensus on zero carbon.

Tam added that for the third consecutive year MIECF has also become a professional exhibition about the commitment of achieving “carbon neutrality”, playing a leading role in accelerating the pace of green development in the industry.

Moreover, Tam said that the government will give “full play to Macau’s advantage as ‘One Centre, One Platform and One Base’, strengthen Macau’s functions and role as an intersection of domestic and international dual circulation, and effectively promote the high-quality development of Macau’s economy while focusing on promoting international and regional development”.

During a working visit to Macau in December 2019, President Xi Jinping underlined the importance of the “One Centre, One Platform and One Base” goal for Macau, namely to become a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure, an economic and trade cooperation platform for China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs), as well as a cultural exchange and cooperation base.

In his speech yesterday, Tam also highlighted the measures launched by the Macau government in coordination with the nation’s “dual-carbon” goal, as well as the launch of the “Long-Term Decarbonisation Strategy” by the local government last year.

Yesterday’s opening event was also attended by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Zheng Xincong and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Commissioner in the MSAR Liu Xianfa.
