The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held the “USJ-Kong Hon Academy for Cellular Nutrition and Health and The First Cellular Health Research Symposium” on its Ilha Verde campus yesterday, with the event marking the inauguration of the academy.

According to a statement from the university, the academy was established by USJ together with the Macau Kong-Hon Biomedical Technology Development Group. The statement said that during his welcome remarks yesterday, Bishop of Macau and USJ Chancellor Stephen Lee Bun-Sang noted that the academy is a platform designated to bridge renowned academic institutions in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and elsewhere in the nation with international research organisations.

Lee added that its establishment aimed to promote innovative development in industry-academia-research integration in the field of cellular health and disease prevention in Macau.

Moreover, Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) Acting Director Teng Sio Hong said in his speech he hoped the academy’s establishment would strengthen research capabilities and foster technological innovation. Teng also highlighted the government’s promotion of scientific research, innovation, and industry-academia collaboration in the field of traditional Chinese medicine within local higher education institutions.

Teng attended the event as a representative of Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U.

Yesterday’s event also included a presentation of the academy’s first collaborative research and development results, as well as talks by scientists, researchers, and two prominent academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), according to the statement. The academicians discussed the “science and technology of nutrition and biomedicine”, and introduced how “KB-120 cellular nutrition research and development” can be applied to biomedicine.

Letters of appointment were also presented by USJ Rector, Reverend Prof. Stephen Morgan, the statement said.
