The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement yesterday that the Guia Hill Cable Car will close from Monday through May 31 during which technicians will carry out repairs and renovation of its two stations, as some of their facilities have worn out.
According to the statement, the repairs and renovation will cover the lower and upper stations’ ceilings, floors, walls, supports, safety barriers, and stairs.
In addition, the work will also improve the lighting system.
During the period, the bureau will also carry out the cable car system’s annual safety check, which will cover its supporting towers, steel cables, carriages, and protective devices, the statement said.
The cable car is scheduled to reopen on June 1 after the completion of its stations’ renovation.
The cable car runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except on Mondays. If a public holiday falls on a Monday, the cable car is closed on the following day instead, i.e., it is open on the public holiday that falls on a Monday.
A single ticket costs two patacas, while a return ticket costs three patacas. Special concessionary return tickets for kids aged 12 or below and seniors aged 65 or over cost two patacas.
The aerial gondola lift system started operating in 1997. The ride, which takes just 80 seconds, is reputed to be one of the world’s shortest cable car rides. Visitors can gain a bird’s-eye view of Flora Garden below and a panoramic view of a part of the peninsula.
