The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) urged the public in a statement on Saturday not to feed babies a made-in-France baby food named “Chicken and Veg with Sweetcorn Mash”, which may contain furans and methylfurans.
The statement did not say whether the products of the problematic batch are being sold in Macau.
According to the statement, the bureau was informed by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland about the problematic foodstuff – a 130-gram baby food product named“Chicken and Veg with Sweetcorn Mash”, batch number 3250 03:53 B5 LC, under the brand of “Ella’s Kitchen”, with a best-before date of October 2024.
According to the statement, furans and methylfurans are process contaminants that can form when food is heated, which are widely found in coffee and tinned food. While consuming the contaminated product doesn’t present an immediate health risk, long-term, continuous intake may pose a potential risk to health. Therefore, exposure to these substances needs to be minimised.
The bureau immediately issued an alert to the local food trade and dispatched officials to inspect the market, and urged consumers to stop using the product immediately if they are in possession of it, adding that shops should also immediately cease supplying or selling the product if they have it on their shelves.
Anyone who has food-related enquiries may call the IAM’s Food Safety Hotline on 2833 8181.
