The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) hosted its International Cultural Carnival on Saturday, marking the first time that it was open to the general public.

Formerly an internal event, Vice Rector Teresa Loong (農韻淇) said during her speech that “this time, we would like to let all members of the public share the joy with USJ and really experience different international cultures here. So, it is our honour to arrange these activities”.

USJ Chancellor, Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang added in his speech that attendees at the carnival had the chance to “engage and exchange ideas with one another”, encouraging participants “to embrace the values of learning, sharing and respecting the cultures of one another. By doing so, we can foster a deeper understanding of the various cultures present”.

The one-day carnival featured booths showcasing cuisines from different countries and regions such as Macau, Myanmar, Portuguese speaking countries (PSCs), Vietnam, and the Philippines. A colourful parade featuring staff and students carrying flags representing their countries was also held, along with performances such as a Wing Chun demonstration.

The event also featured information booths, a marketplace, an art exhibition and a “Blue Book Café” at the USJ Library in support of World Book Day, which is annually on April 23.

A statement provided by the private Catholic university yesterday noted that the cultural heritage of over 50 nationalities was represented by USJ students, faculty and alumni, while there were over 30 booths around the campus. The statement added that there were around 1,000 participants comprising students, faculty, alumni and members of the public.
