Macau generated 501,512 tonnes of solid waste last year, which was treated in its incinerator in Pac On in Taipa, an increase of 14.8 percent from 2022, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

A DSEC statement on Friday attributed last year’s increase in solid waste to the recovery of the number of visitor arrivals.

Correspondingly, the statement said, each person generated an average of 2.02 kilogrammes of solid waste per day last year, an increase from 1.77 kilogrammes in 2022.

According to historical official statistics, Macau’s per-capita solid waste per day in 2019, 2020 and 2021 stood at 2.22, 1.74, and 1.82 respectively.

The statement also underlined that with a large decrease in medical waste, last year’s total volume of special and hazardous waste dropped 34.6 percent year on year to 5,401 tonnes last year.
