The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) busted two food-processing plants in the Areia Preta district recently as they used expired ingredients, involving 72 packages of expired bun fillings weighing about 340 kg, according to an IAM statement yesterday.

According to the bureau, the expired packets of fillings found included white lotus seed paste, taro paste, red bean paste and green bean paste.

The statement said that the expired fillings were used to produce buns to supply to two street-food outlets, namely 快秒小食店 in Areia Preta district, and 開平佬 in Nam Van.

The statement said the bureau has taken immediate preventive and control measures by sealing up the expired raw materials, ordering the food factories concerned to stop production and supply, and appealing to the trade to immediately stop using the fillings or products

The statement said the bureau would penalise the two food-processing plants in accordance with the food safety law, i.e., impose a fine of 50,000 to 600,000 patacas for administrative offences, and up to five years’ imprisonment for the production and selling of hazardous food.
