Macau recorded this year’s second imported case of dengue fever yesterday, the Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement last night.

According to the statement, the patient is a 35-year-old local man who lives in Fok Neng Building on Travessa da Corda, a street near Teatro Alegria (known as Wing Lok Cinema in Cantonese) in San Kio district. He works at Plaza Oceano, the shopping centre of the sprawling Ocean Garden residential estate in Taipa.

The man visited his relatives in Brazil between April 11 and 29. After returning to Macau, the statement said, he came down with a fever, muscle pain, orbital pain (pain on the eye socket), and a headache on Tuesday, after which he sought treatment at the emergency department of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre the next day where he had his blood sample collected for a test.

The man was diagnosed with Grade I dengue fever yesterday, the statement said.

Last night’s statement said that the man was in a stable condition. He still had a low-grade fever without having developed a rash last night, according to the statement, which did not mention whether he has been discharged from hospital.

According to the statement, the patient has told the Health Breau that after coming down with the symptoms, he had not left his home before seeking treatment on Wednesday, except when he went to work on Tuesday morning.

The statement said that by yesterday the man’s family members living with him in Macau had not come down with dengue symptoms, but one of his relatives in Brazil had also been diagnosed with dengue fever there.

The statement underlined that the Macau Health Bureau has classified the man’s case as an imported case of dengue fever after considering his travel history and the time of the onset of his symptoms, as well as its laboratory test results.

The Health Bureau has carried out measures to eradicate mosquitoes in the areas around the patient’s home and workplace.

Macau reported seven imported cases of dengue fever last year.
