The Macao University of Tourism (UTM), in conjunction with Smart Education Co. Ltd., co-hosted yesterday a “TOEFL and TOEIC Certification Seminar” on the Mong Ha campus, aiming to deepen the understanding of about 20 local secondary schools’ representatives of the two English-language proficiency tests, thus encouraging their students to improve their English proficiency and obtain their language certificates.

UTM set up a TOEFL iBT test centre in September last year on its Mong Ha campus, according to a UTM statement, which noted that the university provides a series of courses to help students prepare for the TOEFL and TOEIC tests, so as to enhance their competitiveness and increase their chance of being admitted to internationally-ranked universities.

TOEFL iBT means TOEFL internet-based test.

While TOEFL is the acronym for “Test of English as a Foreign Language”, TOEIC stands for “Test of English for International Communication”.

According to the statement, TOEFL is an internationally recognised standard for English language proficiency, with currently more than 8,500 schools and institutions in 130 countries and regions accepting it for student admissions, universities in Australia, Canada, the US and the UK in particular, while TOEIC is a test of English proficiency for non-native speakers, which shows the test takers’ English communication skills and their level of fluency. TOEIC is recognised by more than seven million people worldwide and by more than 14,000 companies, schools and government entities, the statement noted.

Hong Kong-based Smart Education Co. Ltd. is a provider of e-learning solutions in China including Hong Kong, Macau and elsewhere in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The company runs English, Chinese and Mathematics e-learning programmes.
