An exhibition entitled “Calligraphy of Aphorisms in Portuguese and Chinese” by local artists Fernando António and Choi Chun Heng, hosted by the private Rui Cunha Foundation (FRC), is being held at FRC Gallery, displaying 60 works representing 30 pairs of calligraphy aphorisms in Macau’s two official languages.

The exhibition opened on Tuesday evening.

António is a local calligrapher and collector, president of the Supervisory Board of the Macau Orient Painting and Calligraphy Association (MOPCA), a statement by the foundation said, adding that he participated in the 3rd MOPCA Members’ Works Exhibition, co-organised by FRC in September 2019.

According to the statement, the project started with António, who was quoted as saying: “I attempted to write Portuguese calligraphy, an experience which satisfied me and pleased others. After numerous attempts, I had the opportunity to invite Calligraphy Master Choi Chun Heng to hold a joint exhibition of calligraphy thoughts in both languages.”

Choi is a calligrapher and collector fond of music and folk art, who is also the chairman of the Macau Da Feng Tang Art House, the statement said, adding that he is a Chinese Calligraphy instructor at the public University of Macau (UM).

In the past 20 years, Choi has held many calligraphy and painting collection exhibitions in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and elsewhere, and his work won the 1989 Macau Calligraphy Championship, the statement said, adding that he has also hosted local public broadcaster TDM’s moral education programmes such as “Disciple Rules” and “Normal Mind – Ordinary Things”.

The exhibition is being held in the FRC ground-floor gallery of Luen Pong Building on 749 Avenida da Praia Grande in the city centre.

The artworks will be on display until next Saturday, May 18. For enquiries, call 2892 3288 or visit www.ruicunha.org.
