Pseudomonas aeruginosa – a bacterium that can cause infections in humans, mostly in hospital patients – in a bottled water sample taken from a bottling plant in Macau has been found to exceed the legal limit, and the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) called yesterday for an immediate stop to the consumption and supply of the problematic product.
An IAM statement said that its staff, through routine food sampling and testing, detected Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a bottled water sample taken from a local bottling plant, which exceeded Macau’s food safety standard, underlining that it has already ordered the suspension of the sale of the problematic product.
The statement identified the product as bottled “natural drinking water” by Yan Yi Da Healthful Water Co. Ltd. (“揚一達養生水有限公司”) with a production date of April 29 this year, taken from the plant in the Second Block of Keck Seng Industrial Building on Avenida de Venceslau de Morais.
The bureau, according to the statement, has already requested the manufacturer to stop selling the product, while ordering it to recall the product from the local market, apart from carrying out comprehensive cleaning and disinfection of its production line.
The statement underlined the bureau’s commitment to carrying out subsequent checks and inspections on the plant until its safety and hygiene requirements are complied with.
Generally speaking, according to the statement, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is less pathogenic to healthy people. However, it poses a greater health risk to people with low resistance, causing acute enteritis and skin inflammation, among other diseases.
