Macau’s population rose by 2,700 to 686,400 between last year’s fourth quarter and this year’s first quarter, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.
According to a DSEC statement, the increase was mainly due to a rise in the number of non-resident workers (NRWs) living in Macau.
Based on Macau’s land area of 33.3 sq.km, its population density reached 20,612 per sq.km at the end of March, one of the world’s highest.
Females accounted for 53.4 percent of Macau’s population.
A total of 856 live births were delivered in the first three months of the year, a decrease of 105 quarter on quarter. There were 452 male and 404 female babies, resulting in a sex ratio at birth of 111.9, i.e., 111.9 male babies per 100 female babies.
Mortality increased by 37 deaths to 631 deaths. The top three underlying causes of death were neoplasms (232), diseases of the circulatory system (159), and diseases of the respiratory system (110).
The number of NRWs living in Macau rose by 2,808 quarter on quarter to 179,469 at the end of March.
