The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and MGM Macau jointly launched yesterday a training series entitled “Together We Deliver Exceptional Hospitality As Tourism Ambassadors”, including a themed seminar hosted by Hong Kong artist-cum-emcee Mayanne Mak Mei-yan and a short video contest.

MGTO Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong addressed the programme’s launching ceremony held at the MGM Cotai Theatre yesterday, with more than 700 participants attending.

The series, with the aim of promoting a culture of hospitality and good service by the local tourism industry, building a tourism image of a courteous city and consolidating Macau’s status as a World Tourism and Leisure Centre, is part of the ongoing Macao Courtesy Campaign that was launched by MGTO last year.

Cheng said that his bureau has been cooperating with the sector and associations to instil the importance of hospitality and courtesy through seminars, training courses, and workshops, pointing out that the objective of the programme is to help the industry enhance the quality of service to receive tourists from different places.

During yesterday’s seminar, Mak talked about her experiences in travelling to different places in the world, as well as standards and the application of etiquette and how to adapt to cultural differences, pointing out that the needs of tourists have changed in recent years, with more and more tourists placing emphasis on their personal experience. She also said that quality hospitality is an important part of enhancing the experience of tourists.

Mak underlined that it is important for the hospitality sector to create a first impression of the destination, such as taking the initiative to greet tourists and providing them with enthusiastic assistance. She pointed out that not only those engaged in the tourism industry, but also other residents can practise courteous activities in their daily lives, thus enhancing Macau’s image.

MGM China’s Executive Director, Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng said during yesterday’s seminar that he expects participants to benefit from the seminar and apply what they have learnt to their respective areas of expertise, and to play a part in hospitality in their roles.

Meanwhile, MGM’s short video contest, entitled “Youth Hospitality Activities – Macau Tourism Courtesy Short Video Contest”, aiming to bring young people closer to tourism and encourage creative productions, will open in the third quarter to local students aged between 15 and 35, according to MGM.
