The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) hoisted the Standby Signal No. 1 at 5 p.m. yesterday, saying in a statement that the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.3 was “very likely” to be hoisted during the daytime today.

It’s the first time that the observatory has hoisted Signal No.1 this year.

Signal No. 1 was hoisted as a tropical depression formed 550 kilometres southwest of the city yesterday afternoon. At that time, it was heading north-northwest at about 20 to 25 kilometres per hour.

The tropical depression was expected to move northwards and make landfall on the western coast of Guangdong this evening or at night, the bureau said. After making landfall, the tropical cyclone is forecast to move north-eastwards and gradually weaken.

According to the bureau, based on the current trajectory of the storm, it expects the tropical cyclone to bring occasional downpours and thunderstorms to the city today and tomorrow.

The bureau also said that there will not be astronomical tides today and tomorrow. However, due to the expected persistent rainfall, there was the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas, urging the public to pay close attention to the latest weather information.
