The jurisdiction over the V-shaped area southeast of Zhuhai’s Gongbei checkpoint was transferred on Friday from Zhuhai city to the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR).
The transfer of jurisdiction over the area took effect at 00:00 a.m. on Friday May 31, 2024, the State Council decided on May 24.
Consequently, Macau’s laws and regulations have been applicable in the area since then.
A ceremony marking the jurisdiction’s transfer was held on Friday morning at a hotel in Zhuhai.
On December 29 last year, the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee in Beijing passed a decision to authorise the MSAR to exercise jurisdiction over the V-shaped area southeast of Zhuhai’s Gongbei checkpoint, enabling the Macau government to lease the area from Zhuhai so that the Light Rail Transit (LRT) East Line can be extended to the Qingmao pedestrian border checkpoint by running under the Barrier Gate.
According to the NPC Standing Committee’s decision, Macau’s leasehold of the area will expire on December 19, 2049, i.e., 50 years after the establishment of the MSAR.
The V-shaped area covers 3,700.178 square metres, comprising a land area of 1,439.130 square metres and a maritime area of 2,261.048 square metres.
