Award winning British choreographer Matthew Bourne’s contemporary take on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” is set to be staged at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Grand Auditorium for four shows from July 11 to 14.

The reimagining of the well-known tragedy about the star-crossed lovers, which is set in a mental hospital for troubled youngsters called the Verona Institute, features a skilful cast, “young energy”, and a striking set and costume designs, according to a Friday statement by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).

The statement said that the adaptation has garnered acclaim since premiering in 2019.

Bourne is a winner of both the Tony Award* and Olivier Awards**, and has been a prolific ballet creator and choreographer for musicals, theatre and television since the 1980s. He is known for transforming classics such as “The Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker” into edgy productions, the statement noted.

Meanwhile, a workshop hosted by some of the dancers will be held on July 10 at the Macau Cultural Centre, participation in which dance enthusiasts can apply for via their Macao One Account (activity application), the statement said.

Tickets are currently on sale on platforms such as the Macao Ticketing Network. More information can be found on www.icm.gov.mo and www.ccm.gov.mo, while enquiries can be made by calling 2840 0555.
