An arts event titled “Mountains and Rivers Bring us Together – Macau-Anhui-Fujian art exchange”, featuring calligraphers and painters from the three places, was held in Anhui from May 25 until Sunday, according to a statement released by the event organiser last week.

According to the statement, Ung Si Meng, the honorary chairman of the Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (commonly known as Kai Fong, its name in Cantonese), on May 25 led a group of calligraphers and painters from Macau and Fujian to Anhui province’s Huangshan (“Yellow Mountain”) range, marking the start of the exchange event. The statement noted that the delegation visited various cultural heritage sites such as the Huizhou Ancient City and Xixi South Ancient Village.

The statement underlined that Anhui is known as the birthplace of China’s “Four Treasures of the Study”.

“Four Treasures of the Study” (文房四寶) is an expression used to denote the brush, ink, paper and ink stone used in Chinese calligraphy

During the delegation’s visit, the 91-year-old Ung received a work depicting snow-covered Huangshan pines printed on rice paper using a special technique as a special gift, wishing him perpetual youth like the Huangshan pines.

On May 28, delegations from Macau and Fujian, as well as artists from Anhui, held an exhibition at Lai Shaoqi Art Museum in Hefei, Anhui’s capital city, where artists from the three places interacted, learnt from each other, and deepened their understanding of different artistic styles and techniques, the statement said.

The statement noted that eight local artists, including Ung, a renowned calligrapher, took a total of 25 calligraphy and painting works to the exhibition.

The exchange event lasted until last Thursday, aiming to further cultivate and promote traditional Chinese culture, strengthen the exchange of the art of calligraphy and painting among Macau, Anhui and Fujian, according to the statement.
