Macau is set to host the 2024 WTT (World Table Tennis) tournament at the Macau East Asian Games Dome in Cotai in September, gathering 32 male and 32 female players for another “high-level international table tennis event” following April’s International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Men’s and Women’s World Cup, according a statement from the Sports Bureau (ID) on Friday.
Scheduled to take place from September 9 to 15, the World Table Tennis Champions Macao 2024 marks the fifth time that Macau will host the WTT, which it has been doing since 2020, the statement noted.
The statement said that the event is the first “top table tennis competition” after the Paris Olympics, which will start on July 26.
“The synergistic effect of hosting more major sporting events will continue to drive the development of sports industries in Macau, facilitate the construction of Macau into a ‘City of Sports’, thereby contributing toward the ‘1+4’ strategy for appropriate economic diversification* and polishing up Macau’s ‘golden business card’ as an international metropolis with sports”, the bureau said in the statement.
Last year’s men’s and women’s singles finals were won respectively, by men’s world number one Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu, the women’s world number two, the WTT website notes.
More information will be announced in due course.
*The Macau government’s 1+4 model aims to consolidate and diversify the development of the city’s tourism and leisure industry while putting special emphasis on promoting the development of four nascent industries, namely big health; modern finance; high-tech; and MICE and commerce as well as culture and sports.
