A man from the mainland has been arrested for cheating an illegal currency exchange dealer out of HK$50,000 in casino chips, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect is a 28-year-old man surnamed Li who told the police that he’s jobless.

According to Chan, the female local victim encountered Li at a Cotai casino last Thursday and engaged in a currency transaction. The victim handed HK$50,000 in gambling chips to Li, who then asked the victim for her bank QR code so that he could – purportedly – transfer money to her.

After appearing to have scanned her QR code, Li claimed that he had already transferred the money and attempted to leave the scene. The victim immediately checked her bank account and discovered that no transaction had been made, leading her to alert security guards nearby who intercepted Li.

Li admitted to scamming the victim, claiming that he had gambled away all his own money and wanted to win back his losses. The police found the victim’s casino chips on him.

Li has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, Chan said.
