A local man and a local woman have separately been apprehended for theft-by-finding, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said during a regular press conference yesterday.
In the first case, the suspect surnamed Fong, who is in her fifties, works in a hotel.
According to Cheong, a local woman reported to the police on May 29 that she had lost her tote bag in Rua Nova da Areia Preta, containing 11,000 patacas. Subsequently, police officers identified Fong as the individual who had picked up the bag, leading to her arrest.
Fong admitted to the crime and told the police that she had picked up the bag, taken the cash inside and thrown the bag away. The police retrieved the cash from her flat.
In the second case, the suspect surnamed Ng, who is in his sixties, told the police that he’s jobless.
According to Cheong, when the local male victim took his umbrella out of his reusable shopping bag in Rua de Lei Pou Chon, 31,000 patacas fell out of the bag unnoticed. Later, he went back to search for the money but to no avail.
Subsequently, police officers identified Ng as the individual who had picked up the money, leading to his arrest in a residential building lobby nearby last Thursday.
Ng admitted to the crime. The police retrieved the cash from his flat.
Ng and Fong have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, Cheong said.
