Macau Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM) Vice-Chairman Fong Ka Fai told a press conference at the federation’s headquarters on Rua da Ribeira do Patane about the one-day “6th Macao Integrated Tourism and Leisure Enterprise Vocational Skills Competition 2024” that the contest will be held next Thursday at Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) in Cotai.

The Macau Federation of Trade Unions (MFTU) is known as Gung Luen in Cantonese.

Fong said that the competition is co-hosted by the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) and Gung Luen, in conjunction with Macau’s six integrated resort (IR) operators – SJM Holdings, Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), Sands China, Melco International Development, Wynn Macau, and MGM China Holdings, with more than 1,000 competitors having signed up to participate in the contest.

Fong said the aim of the competition is to increase the professional quality of IR employees and to demonstrate their efforts, adding that the training of high quality and professional capacity staff is an important process for developing Macau into a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure.

Fong said that the competition will be divided into three categories, namely the “Gaming and Entertainment Professional Skills Competition”, “Hotel Services Professional Skills Competition” and “Gastronomy Professional Skills Competition”, in order to showcase the “unique charm” of Macau’s tourism, entertainment and cuisine.

In addition, on the sidelines of the event, Fong told the media that the public Macau Foundation’s (FM) new financial support programme encouraging local associations to organise 40-member tour groups to the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin has been very popular, pointing out that 6,000 to 7,000 people had signed up to join the tours during the summer holiday in July and August.

Fong noted that 10 tours have been departing every day since its launch in the middle of this month, with the theme park route being the most popular.
