A fire broke out in a flat in Tong Wa San Chun Building (東華新邨) in Areia Preta district at around 6 p.m. yesterday, resulting in the evacuation of 46 residents of the building, six of whom felt unwell after inhaling smoke were taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in a statement yesterday.
The statement said that a malfunctioning charging device in a room in the flat was the possible cause of the fire.
According to the statement, the blaze broke out at around 6 p.m. yesterday in a flat on the sixth floor of Block 14 of the Tong Wa San Chun Building comprising 14 blocks on Estrada Marginal da Areia Preta.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and found that the flat was ablaze. A total of 30 residents self-evacuated to the ground floor of the building, while 16 residents self-evacuated to the rooftop of the building during the fire, the statement said.
According to the statement, the six who were taken to the hospital comprised three men and three women aged between 10 and 82, and they were all in stable condition. One of them is a Philippine passport holder, while the remainder are Macau residents.
The statement also said that the walls of the flat were blackened by the blaze, with one of the rooms completely burnt out.
