A 75-year-old local man was intercepted by the Macau Customs Service (SA) at the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Friday for attempting to smuggle a live chicken in a cardboard box from the mainland to Macau, according to a statement by the Customs yesterday.
According to the statement, customs officers noticed that the man looked nervous as he walked through the arrival hall at the Barrier Gate checkpoint, so they stopped him and inspected the box he was carrying.
The officers then found a live chicken inside the box. The man told the Customs officers that the live chicken was given to him by his friend to bring back to Macau for personal consumption.
The man was suspected of violating the Animal Protection Law and has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fine or imprisonment of up to one year.
The statement urged members of the public to report suspected smuggling by contacting the Macau Customs Service by phone on 28965001, fax 28965003, or email info@customs.gov.mo.
