A mainland man cheated a supermarket in Zape on June 30 out of HK$1,000 by pretending that he wanted to change a HK$1,000 banknote for smaller notes, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lei Chan Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Lei said: “On that day, a man was shopping in a supermarket and asked the supermarket staff to “break” the HK$1,000 banknote, during which he took advantage of the staff’s inattention to take back the banknote the staff member had put on the cashier’s counter, while also taking the smaller notes the staff member had given him in exchange for the HK$1,000 banknote, and then left.”

According to Lei, the supermarket’s person-in-charge reported the case to the Public Security Police on Tuesday after finding discrepancies in the accounts when he counted the supermarket’s June 30 takings and scrutinising the supermarket’s CCTV footage.

On Tuesday, the Public Security Police identified and arrested the suspect surnamed Zhang, who is in his fifties, in a hotel guestroom in Zape, where PSP officers also found a mainland woman who had been overstaying in Macau since May last year.  The female suspect, who is in her forties, told the police that she is Zhang’s friend.

The Public Security Police have transferred Zhang to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where he faces charges of aiding and abetting an illegal immigrant and fraud.
