The works of three artists are simultaneously being showcased in separate exhibitions at the Ox Warehouse, each presenting their art through mediums such as videos and installations to convey their themes.

The exhibitions are “Neverland – A Slice of Cake Project” by Xu Ge, “Obstinate Spine” by Song Gewen and “Next of Kin” by Cheung Zhiwan. All exhibitions are held as part of the art group’s artist-in-residence programmes in Macau, with all works showcased until August 5.

Xu’s project, which started in 2014 while participating in a charitable exhibition in Shanghai, features items such as manuscripts and images, according to a recent Ox Warehouse statement. During his residency in Macau, he “embarked on a quest to uncover contradictory, opposing, or parallel elements and keywords woven within diverse cultures and contexts”, with the “discoveries” being categorised and combined into cake-shaped installations using local materials.

Song’s “Obstinate Spine”, meanwhile, had continued his exploration of “the principles and laws of things and the mind”, according to the statement. The three installations are based on Macau’s localised features and Ox Warehouse’s spatial characteristics, while a statement displayed at the exhibition added that they are also “deeply connected” to the artist’s exploration of Macau, addressing themes of bodily experience, memory, and geographical boundaries.

Lastly, US-born Cheung, who returned to his “ancestral roots” in the mainland seeking memories, tackles “the complexity of narrative language” in his exhibition.

Among his works are digital scans of buildings that now stand where his grandparents’ house used to be and a reflection of his experiences of living in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Also included are videos that he took of items related to the goddess A-Ma while he was in Macau, “contemplating her role as a traditional patron saint and deity in the AI [artificial intelligence] era”, according to the statement.

The exhibitions can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with more information available on Ox Warehouse’s Facebook or Instagram pages.
