An off-duty fireman involved in a fraud case in 2022 when he allegedly deceived a local watch shop owner out of a luxury-brand watch worth HK$470,000, was dismissed last Thursday by the Secretariat for Security (GSS), according to a GSS statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the fireman surnamed Chan is a local resident who joined the Fire Services Bureau (CB) in 2012.

According to the statement, on August 23 in 2022, the suspect pretended to be a customer and placed an order for a luxury-brand watch valued at HK$470,000, and then fraudulently claimed that the cash was in a leather suitcase and handed it to the shop owner, which only contained books, snacks and other sundries but no cash.

Chan then rode away from the shop on a bicycle while the shop owner was inspecting the suitcase. The owner quickly realised that he had been cheated, and immediately reported the case to the police.

Chan had been placed on temporary suspension since shortly after the incident, the statement said.

The Fire Services Bureau (CB) has finished its disciplinary proceedings, and the GSS approved Chan’s dismissal on July 4.

Chan has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where he faces a charge of fraud involving a considerable amount of money.
