The weather from today through Friday is expected to be “very hot”, with the highest temperature generally reaching 35 to 36 degrees Celsius, the local observatory said yesterday.
The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement yesterday that under the subsiding air at the outer circulation of Typhoon Gaemi, “very hot” weather was expected along the coast of South China in the middle to late part of this week, from today through Friday, with temperatures generally expected to rise to 35-36 degrees or above.
The statement pointed out that Gaemi, currently located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, which has a wide circulation and is gradually increasing in strength, was expected to grow into a super typhoon. However, there is a “very low” risk for Gaemi to directly hit the Guangdong coast, the local weather forecaster said, instead “probably” first moving towards Taiwan region and then towards the Fujian-Zhejiang area, before moving westward further inland.
The weather station urged the public to take rain gear when going out and to stay in a safe place to take shelter in case of severe convective weather: “The high temperature may trigger inland thermal convection in the afternoon, which may form an area of strong thunderstorms – usually accompanied by frequent lightning and strong gusty winds – before moving closer to the coast”.
Convective weather refers to weather patterns and events that are driven by the upward movement of air, known as convection. This type of weather is typically characterised by the formation of clouds, precipitation, and sometimes severe weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes, according to Poe.
The observatory said in the statement that it expects a trough of low atmospheric pressure to affect the South China coast from this weekend to early next week, with more showers, noting that if Gaemi moves inland on a more southerly track, the trough would become “more active” and bring more significant wind and rain.
