A local woman has fallen victim to an online part-time job scam, resulting in a loss of 269,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said at a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Lou, the victim came across an online advertisement and contacted the advertiser. She was promised the opportunity to earn money by simply “liking” social media posts. However, she was required to invest money upfront, with the promise of receiving profits ranging from one to five percent of her investment upon completing the tasks.
Believing the offer to be genuine, the victim proceeded to purchase virtual currency to initiate the tasks. Initially, she received a “reward” of 500 patacas for completing the first set of tasks, after which she continued to invest and perform additional tasks. However, as she reached a point where she could no longer invest further, she told her family about the situation. It was then that her family suspected she had fallen victim to a scam, leading her to report the case to the police.
