A local woman was scammed out of over 363,000 patacas after investing in cryptocurrencies, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said at a press conference yesterday.

Lou said the victim is aged under 30.

According to Lou, the victim read an advertisement about investing in cryptocurrency on a social networking site and joined a chat group on Telegram. She then followed the group’s instructions and purchased virtual currency from the cryptocurrency exchange platform Binance.

From June 18 to last week, the victim transferred a total of 363,000 patacas worth of cryptocurrency to the designated account provided by the fraudsters in the Telegram group.  The fraudsters assured her of profits each time she made an “investment”.

The victim was suddenly kicked out of the Telegram group on Monday, with her messages erased, leading her to suspect that she had been scammed and reported it to the police.
