The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced in a statement in the early hours of today that a boy died in hospital yesterday after drowning in a hotel swimming pool in Coloane.
According to the PJ statement, the Judiciary Police received a report from the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre at 4:25 p.m. yesterday that the boy had died after emergency treatment to save his life failed.
The statement did not say when exactly the boy passed away.
The PJ statement said that the boy’s family checked into the hotel yesterday. At 2:20 p.m., the statement said, the boy went to the hotel’s swimming pool to swim alone. The statement said that a male hotel guest found at 2:27 p.m. that the boy was at the bottom of the pool so that he immediately rescued the boy from the pool, after which the hotel staff called the emergency service.
A statement by the Fire Services Bureau (CB) yesterday identified the hotel where the case occurred as Pousada de Coloane.
The CB statement also identified the boy as a 12-year-old from the mainland.
The CB statement also said that when firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene, they were unable to detect the boy’s heartbeat and he was not breathing.
