Six animal protection associations held a joint protest march yesterday to call for the more effective enforcement of the recently enacted Animal Protection Law.
The protesters also slammed the government for the “sloppy” handling of a Judiciary Police (PJ) officer’s animal abuse case last week.
The incident in which PJ officer Miguel Weng Meng Quintal Chan abused his dog on the verandah of his flat on Tuesday quickly became widely known because someone living nearby filmed the abuse which went viral on various social media.
A Public Security Police (PSP) statement last week said that a veterinarian of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) who examined Pazu, Chan’s dog, at the scene determined that the canine had “apparently” not been injured, adding that therefore the incident was not considered a criminal case, according to the Animal Protection Law.
The statement also said Chan had refused to go to a police station for further questioning about the incident. According to the PSP statement, Chan could refuse to go the police station since the incident was not a criminal case.
