A statement released by the Public Security Police (PSP) late last night said that Macau logged 753,580 arrivals and departures on Saturday, a single-day record, an increase of 5.04 percent compared to the previous record of 717,457 on August 10.

Among the total arrivals and departures on Saturday, 166,461 were inbound visitors, accounting for 44.54 percent of the total number of arrivals, the statement noted.

The arrival-cum-departure figures comprise visitors, residents, non-local students studying in Macau and non-resident workers (popularly known as blue-card holders).

According to the statement, 399,580 arrivals and departures were made via the Barrier Gate checkpoint, accounting for 53.02 percent of the total, which is the highest figure in a single day since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected Macau’s economy, its tourism, entertainment and retail sectors in particular, between early 2020 and late 2022.

The statement added that 88,517 arrivals and departures were made via the Macau-mainland joint border checkpoint in Hengqin, accounting for 11.75 percent of the total, which is the highest figure in a single day ever.

Meanwhile, 92,802 arrivals and departures made via the Macau checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB), accounting for 12.31 percent of the total, while 113,073 arrivals and departures made via the Qingmao pedestrian border checkpoint, accounting for 15 percent of the total.

The statement said the Public Security Police expect the passenger flow at different checkpoints in Macau to remain high this month, adding that they will continue to work closely with the Macau Customs Service (SA), Zhuhai Customs and the Hong Kong Immigration Department to prepare crowd forecasts and early warnings for the peak period of traveller flows, and, if need be, to open additional lanes in a timely manner.
