A mother and daughter duo from Bosnia and Herzegovina have been arrested for their alleged involvement in theft, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Chi Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The mother, in her forties surnamed Sajma, told the police that she’s jobless. Her daughter surnamed Tiffany is under the age of 16.
According to Wong, while a female mainland tourist was taking photos near the Ruins of Saint Paul’s on Friday, she suddenly discovered that her suitcase had vanished and called for help. A mainland man noticed Sajma and Tiffany carrying the tourist’s suitcase. He followed them to a nearby souvenir shop.
Inside the shop, the man witnessed Sajma stealing 10,000 yuan from another female victim’s backpack. When Sajma attempted to hand the stolen cash to her daughter Tiffany, the man immediately intercepted the duo. Sajma fled the scene, leaving Tiffany behind.
Later, the victim whose luggage had disappeared arrived and identified her missing suitcase next to Tiffany.
Later that day, security guards from a Cotai hotel reported to the police that they had intercepted Sajma for another theft case detected on the previous day when she allegedly stole HK$11,000 and S$500.
Under questioning, the duo denied the accusations.
The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation. Sajma faces aggravated theft charges. Tiffany is under the age of criminal responsibility, which in Macau stands at 16.
