A taxi driver has been arrested for drunk driving, hitting 10 traffic bollards, reversing against the flow of traffic, and a hit and run, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Chi Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Fong is in his forties. He said he’s self-employed.

According to Wong, the police received a report from a local resident in the wee hours of Monday saying that a car had reversed along Avenida Norte do Hipódromo and hit several traffic bollards. The police soon identified the car and found it nearby in Areia Preta district. The male driver, who had fallen asleep in the driver’s seat, was reeking of alcohol.

A breathalyser test detected his alcohol concentration as 1.47 grams of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under questioning, Fong admitted to drinking alcohol earlier that day in the mainland. He denied the hit-and-run accusation. Wong noted that a total of 10 bollards have been scratched by the vehicle.

Fong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). He faces charges of evading responsibility and drunk driving.

This undated photo provided by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday shows a PSP officer escorting the male drunk-driving suspect to the Traffic Police Headquarters.
